Fireline is the first exhibition in Juha, a season of exhibitions at Folkestone gallery kollectiv, featuring work by artists in Central Europe and curated by Sammi Gale. Fireline comprises a series of large monochrome canvases by Russian artist Vladimir Logutov, beginning in London in 2023, when the artist left his native Russia shortly after the invasion of Ukraine; "devoted to fire but flickering with abstract gesturesā€, they feature a series of bright white marks visible over a horizon line, with ā€œa prospective weight of associations – warmth and destruction, gathering and catastrophe, ritual and spectacle, ancient and everydayā€. The exhibition identity translates this into a typographic context, using an elegant contemporary typeface with forms that are smudged and broken apart as if they had been scorched into the designs. This is paired with cropped greyscale fragments of Vladimir's mark-making, used in flickering sequences suggestive of fire or warfare.
